Alienation in Perversions by Masud Khan

By Masud Khan

Perversions and borderline states have been, by chance of destiny, Masud Khan's leader preoccupation in his scientific paintings over the last 3 many years of his existence. In an prior quantity, The privateness of the Self, he awarded what he known as the normal and personal crystallization of his adventure together with his sufferers and academics; significantly, within the latter classification, Anna Freud, John Rickman and D.W. Winnicott. during this later booklet he is taking his cue from Freud who, as he says, clinically determined the illness of Western Judaeo-Christian cultures when it comes to "the individual alienated from himself".Masud Khan's uncomplicated argument, succinctly said in his Preface, is that "the pervert places an impersonal item among his wish and his associate. This item could be a stereotype delusion, a device or a pornographic snapshot. All 3 alienate the pervert from himself, as, regrettably, from the thing of desire".With its wealth of scientific and theoretical insights, Masud Khan's Alienation in Perversions makes an immense contribution to our figuring out of perversion formation. Its impact extends a ways past the personal self-discipline of psychoanalysis, for the topic explored is one that happens largely in glossy existence and literature. The concluding bankruptcy on pornography makes the purpose tellingly.

I t is this which lends so many of the emotional and sexual relationships of these patients a characteristic aura of role play and make-believe pantomime. A t this stage I would like to discuss the problem of deficiency of primary narcissism i n the ego-structure of these patients. T h e concept of primary narcissism has been brought to the fore front of our metapsychological researches i n recent years through increased interest i n and knowledge of infant-care techniques on the one hand and through more intensive analyses of cases of borderline and schizoid personality disorders on the other.

T h i s failure of the parents, as a couple, distorts their capacity to enter into any affective bond which is not an intimate two-body relationship (Rickman, 1951). A l l these mothers were adequate mothers of the infant. Their weaknesses, foibles and personal blindspots came into operation only when the infant reached toddler stage. This uncertainty of handling characterized 'the weaning period'. I am not referring to breast weaning here. I am discussing what Winnicott (1960) has described : I n the ordinary case the mother's special orientation to the infant carries over beyond the birth process.

T h e y are over-alert, over-eager, very vital and have bouts of depressive lethargy. T h e fact that these patients have enjoyed a healthy infancy is very much the reason why they do not degenerate into perversions proper. Also a specific type of object-relation has been available to them right up to adolescence. This extended bond with the mother is aetiologically very significant, because it means that the relation, in its primitive and regressive affectivity, remains open and avail able to these patients through all stages of pregenital libido develop ment a n d ego-maturation.
