It can be this, I hasten to add, without becoming a version of Hitler's Germany or even of Plato's Republic, as we can see by reflecting that the state in Hegel was meant to include civil society and not to supersede it. Community life does not need to be centrally directed throughout in order to be described as healthy. Let me pass to a second and still more serious objection. If the state has the ethical qualities which Hegel ascribes to it, will this not mean that no one can properly rebel against or repudiate the morality of his own society?
Nature is governed by one set of laws, the moral agent by quite another. Nature has no concern with moral consciousness, the moral consciousness no concern with nature, in so far as nothing really matters to it except its own inner purity. 8 the result that he cannot dissociate himself from the world altogether but must in some measure at least subordinate it to himself. The possibility of successful action rests on something more than inner purity of heart or the right direction of the will, as Kant recognised when he made the existence of God a postulate of pure practical reason.
And though Kant nowhere suggests that human beings can attain to this condition, he is not committed to the view that those who form good habits and are for this reason less troubled by temptation are inferior to those whose every moral decision is reached after an internal struggle. Will is manifested in the fostering and maintaining of virtuous dispositions just as it is in the man whose better and worse selves are in continual conflict. What is correct in Hegel's contention is that the moralist wants not just a particular result, but a particular result attained in a particular way: he is undoubtedly in earnest in demanding the triumph of good over evil, but he wants to see it brought about through moral effort.
